The Overmind is the original apex of the Zerg Swarm in StarCraft: a planetary-scale hive mind that thinks through cerebrates and hungers for perfection. It is less a character with hobbies than a living strategy engine.
Everything Zerg in the first game orbits its will - brood commands, Kerrigan's rebirth, the hunt for Protoss, and the invasion of Aiur. The Overmind seeks to assimilate the strongest essence in the sector, turning war into evolution.
Its vulnerability is structural. Cerebrates can usually be remade, until Dark Templar Void energy changes the rules. That discovery lets Protoss finally wound the Swarm's command lattice. The climax arrives in Eye of the Storm, when Tassadar destroys the Overmind itself.
Brood War refuses to let the idea die quietly. A second Overmind grows on Char; the UED tries to chain it; Kerrigan works to keep the Swarm from falling under Earth control. The hive mind remains the prize even after the original titan falls.
The Overmind endures because it makes Zerg horror cosmic. Marines fight aliens; Protoss fight a god-brain that wants their species as raw material.
Replay Full Circle, Eye of the Storm, To Chain the Beast, and To Slay the Beast - the Overmind is StarCraft's original endboss idea.
