Who Is Zangief? Street Fighter's Red Cyclone Explained

Zangief is one of the most beloved characters in Capcom's Street Fighter series—a towering Russian professional wrestler known as the Red Cyclone. He debuted in Street Fighter II in 1991 and instantly became famous for his massive muscles, chest hair, and devastating grappling moves. Where Ryu seeks personal perfection and Guile seeks justice, Zangief fights for national pride and the thrill of proving that wrestling can conquer any martial art.

Zangief's story is rooted in strength, patriotism, and showmanship. Born in Russia (originally framed in the Soviet era in early games), he trained by wrestling bears in Siberia and built a reputation as an unbeatable grappler. He enters the World Warrior tournament to show the world the power of Russian wrestling and to make his homeland proud. Across the series he remains warm-hearted, loud, and surprisingly gentle outside the ring—a big fighter with an even bigger personality who loves his country, his fans, and a fair fight.

His look matches that identity perfectly: a huge frame, red wrestling briefs, boots, and a confident grin. Later games expand his supporting cast and rivalries, but the core fantasy never changes. Zangief is the friendly giant who closes the distance, grabs you, and ends the round with a spectacular throw.

In gameplay, Zangief is the classic grappler. He is slower than shotos like Ryu and Ken, and he often struggles at long range because he lacks a strong fireball. His gameplan is to walk forward, absorb or dodge projectiles, get into throw range, and force scary mix-ups. Once he is close, the threat of a command grab changes everything—opponents must guess whether to jump, backdash, or stay grounded.

His signature special moves define that style. The Spinning Piledriver (Screw Piledriver) is his most iconic attack: a spinning command grab that deals huge damage and is one of the most feared throws in fighting-game history. The Double Lariat (and its stronger variations) is a spinning clothesline that can hit on both sides and help against jump-ins or extended limbs. Many versions also give him tools like the Banishing Flat / Banishing Fist to knock away projectiles, plus supers such as the devastating Final Atomic Buster, a multi-grab sequence that fits his over-the-top wrestler fantasy.

Playing Zangief is about patience, courage, and timing. You have to advance through fireballs, choose the right moment to lariat, and risk everything for the piledriver. When it works, few characters feel more satisfying.

If you love big damage, scary throws, and a character with a clear story and personality, Zangief is an excellent pick. Behind the Red Cyclone spin is a proud wrestler who wants the world to respect Russian strength—and who will gladly piledrive anyone who stands in his way.
