Guile is one of the most recognizable characters in Capcom's Street Fighter series—an American Air Force major with a flattop haircut, dog tags, and a no-nonsense attitude. He debuted in Street Fighter II in 1991 and instantly stood out as a disciplined military fighter. While Ryu seeks personal strength and Ken chases victory, Guile fights for duty, justice, and unfinished business.
Guile's story is one of friendship, loss, and revenge. His closest friend and fellow soldier was Charlie Nash (known as Nash in later games). Together they investigated the criminal empire Shadaloo and its dictator, M. Bison. During that mission, Charlie was captured and ultimately believed to have been killed by Bison's forces. Guile never forgot. Across Street Fighter II and later entries, his driving motivation is to bring Bison down and honor Charlie's memory.
That personal mission sits alongside his life as a family man. Guile has a wife, Jane, and a daughter, Julia (sometimes called Amy in older materials). His endings and story scenes often show the conflict between his hunger for revenge and his responsibility at home. In many versions, Guile learns that destroying Bison will not bring Charlie back—and that living for the people who are still with him matters just as much as settling the past.
In gameplay, Guile is the classic charge character. Instead of quarter-circle motions like Ryu or Ken, he holds a direction (usually back or down) to "charge," then inputs the opposite direction plus a button to unleash a special. This makes him feel methodical and defensive: he controls space, waits for mistakes, and punishes hard.
His two signature specials are among the most famous in fighting games. The Sonic Boom is a horizontal projectile formed by a sharp cutting motion of his arms; Guile players use it to lock down the mid-screen and force opponents to jump or block. The Flash Kick (Somersault Kick) is a rising anti-air kick that destroys jump-ins and ends many of his strongest punishes. Together, Sonic Boom and Flash Kick create Guile's legendary "turtle" gameplan: control the ground with booms, then Flash Kick anyone who tries to jump over them.
Later games expand his kit with supers such as the Sonic Hurricane, a swirling multi-hit projectile that fits his military, high-impact style. His look and theme music—especially the iconic Street Fighter II stage tune—helped make him a lasting arcade favorite.
If you like patient, strategic fighting-game play and a character with a clear personal story, Guile is an excellent choice. Behind the Sonic Booms and Flash Kicks is a soldier still haunted by Charlie Nash, still hunting Bison, and still trying to balance revenge with the family waiting for him at home.
