Why Is M. Bison Called Vega in Japan? Street Fighter's Famous Name Swap

If you grew up with Western arcades, M. Bison is the red-uniform Shadaloo dictator of Street Fighter II. In Japan, that same final boss is called Vega. The boxer you know as Balrog was originally Mike Bison. The claw fighter you call Vega was originally Balrog. One localization decision scrambled three names forever.

The short version: Capcom built a boxer clearly inspired by Mike Tyson—peak fame era, flashy power, larger-than-life menace—and in Japan named him Mike Bison (often shortened to M. Bison). For overseas releases, Capcom feared legal trouble over that homage. Instead of inventing three brand-new labels, they rotated the names of the three Grand Masters.
