What Is Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers?

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is the arcade update Capcom released in 1993, on CPS-2 hardware. It is still Street Fighter II — six buttons, the same specials, the same world warriors — with four fighters the cabinet had never offered before. Home versions reached the Super Nintendo and the Mega Drive / Genesis in 1994.

Those four are the title. Cammy is the Delta Red commando, spiral kicks and a cannon spike that finishes above your head. Fei Long is the Hong Kong film star, rekka punches in a straight line. Dee Jay is the Jamaican kickboxer who treats a max-out like a chorus. T. Hawk is Thunder Hawk of the Thunderfoot tribe, a grappler whose condor dive crosses the screen. Each one arrived with a new stage and a new reason to drop another coin.

The rest of the card is the Champion Edition roster. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief, Dhalsim, Blanka, and E. Honda are still the world warriors. Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison are still the grand masters you can pick. The six-button layout did not change. If you already knew Street Fighter II, you already knew how to start. The new question was who you were willing to lose to while you learned the newcomers.

What did change is the cabinet. Sprites were redrawn, animation frames were added, and the pace sits a notch quicker than Hyper Fighting. There is still no Super Combo gauge. That meter, and Akuma with it, arrives a year later in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. New Challengers is the last Street Fighter II that asks you to win with specials, normals, and nerve.

The line runs straight: the World Warrior, then Champion Edition, then Hyper Fighting, then this, then Turbo. New Challengers is the one that proved the roster could grow. Cammy in particular never left. The words on the marquee are the fantasy the game is selling — someone new just walked up to the machine.

The clears below are Arcade Mode with no commentary: the four newcomers, then the world warriors who had to make room for them. Browse the Super Street Fighter II page on this site for the full set.
