Who Is Ken Masters? Street Fighter's Flamboyant Rival Explained

Ken Masters is Ryu's best friend, rival, and one of the most popular characters in Capcom's Street Fighter series. He debuted alongside Ryu in the original Street Fighter in 1987 and became a fan favorite in Street Fighter II. Where Ryu is quiet and wandering, Ken is flashy, confident, and competitive—a wealthy American martial artist who loves the spotlight as much as the fight.

Ken also trained under Gouken in the same Ansatsuken style as Ryu, which is why their move lists look similar at first glance. Over time, though, Ken developed a more aggressive, flashy approach. His red gi, blond hair, and cocky grin make him instantly recognizable, and his personality is loud and charismatic. He later marries Eliza and becomes a family man, but he never loses the hunger to prove he is the strongest.

In gameplay, Ken is still a shoto character, but he plays differently from Ryu. Ryu often controls space with strong fireballs and patient defense. Ken prefers to get in close, apply pressure, and overwhelm opponents with speed and mix-ups. He rewards players who like offensive momentum, tricky kick strings, and aggressive special-move use.

His classic special moves share names with Ryu's but have a different feel. Ken's Hadoken is usually a little weaker as a zoning tool, while his Shoryuken is often stronger, flashier, and more central to his combo and punish game. His Tatsumaki Senpukyaku (Hurricane Kick) is frequently used for pressure, combos, and crossing up opponents. In many games Ken also gains signature tools like a more powerful flaming Shoryuken or the spectacular Shippu Jinrai Kyaku, a multi-hit kick super that fits his high-energy style.

That contrast with Ryu is the key to Ken's identity. They learned the same art, but Ken turns it into something louder and more theatrical. Their rivalry is one of fighting games' classic stories: two students walking different paths toward strength—one seeking personal perfection, the other chasing victory and glory.
