Who Is Artanis? StarCraft's Protoss Executor Explained

Artanis is the Protoss leader most players quietly become in classic StarCraft: the Executor charged with saving a people after catastrophe. Where Tassadar is sacrifice and Zeratul is mystery, Artanis is duty under fire.

In the original campaign the player commands Protoss forces through Aiur's darkest hours. Brood War and later lore identify that Executor with Artanis—a young, honorable commander forced to mature as his homeworld burns and traditions crack.

Artanis stands between factions. He must respect Conclave authority while recognizing that old dogma cannot defeat the Zerg alone. Working with Dark Templar allies and Terran friends like Raynor, he represents Protoss willingness to change without abandoning honor.

After Aiur falls, the Brood War Protoss campaign follows survivors to Shakuras. Escape, settlement, temple rituals, and war with the UED and Zerg all unfold under Executor leadership. Artanis is the through-line of that exile: rebuild, protect, and reclaim destiny.

As a character fantasy he is golden armor and resolve—less sarcastic than Raynor, less occult than Zeratul, more the soldier-statesman who must keep an army alive. In later StarCraft media he becomes Hierarch, but the classic foundation is already here: a commander who learns leadership the hard way.

If Protoss are quality, shields, and ancient pride, Artanis is the face that carries those values through defeat. He is not the loudest legend—he is the one still giving orders when the temple lights go out.
