Volfied is an arcade game released by Taito in 1989. It is a spiritual successor to Qix, built around the same core idea: you draw lines to claim parts of the screen while avoiding enemies that move inside the playfield.

You control a small ship that starts from the edge of the screen. When you move along the border you are safe, but when you leave the border and start drawing into the empty area, you become vulnerable. If an enemy or projectile touches the line you are drawing before you finish, you lose a life.

The goal in each stage is to claim a certain percentage of the screen (usually 80% or more) by cutting off sections and trapping enemies in smaller areas. As you capture territory, you reveal background images, and different enemy types appear with unique movement patterns and attacks.

What makes Volfied fun is the risk–reward balance. Short, safe cuts are easier but slowly fill the percentage bar; long, risky cuts can clear huge chunks of the map but are more likely to be interrupted by enemies. Learning when to play safe and when to go for a big move is the key to high scores.

If you like simple but tense arcade games that reward planning and quick reactions, Volfied is a great retro title to try, whether on original arcade hardware, collections, or modern ports.
