Who Are the Zerg in StarCraft? The Swarm Faction Explained

The Zerg are StarCraft's biological nightmare: a hive-minded swarm that evolves by consuming and assimilating other species. In gameplay, they are speed, pressure, and map control—the race that turns the whole battlefield into their hunting ground.

Zerg production is unique. Units hatch from larva at the Hatchery line, so economic growth and army growth are tightly linked. Expanding is not just greed; it is often identity. More Hatcheries mean more larva, more injects of pressure, and more ways to flood the map.

Creep spreads their territory. On Creep, Zerg move faster and buildings thrive; beyond it, they feel more vulnerable. That creates a living front line: push Creep, take expansions, and force opponents to fight on infected ground.

Army composition thrives on waves and adaptation. Early Zerglings punish slow openings, Hydralisks provide flexible firepower, and later threats like Mutalisks, Lurkers, or massive late-game monsters force constant answers. Zerg rarely win by sitting still—they win by never letting the opponent breathe.

Lore centers on hunger, evolution, and control. From the Overmind to Kerrigan's Brood War rise as Queen of Blades, Zerg stories are about domination through assimilation. The campaign missions capture that dread: defend the hive, shatter disrupters, and unleash the Swarm.

If you like aggressive macro, multitasking across the map, and the fantasy of overwhelming an enemy with living tide after living tide, Zerg is StarCraft at its most relentless.
